The continuing wet weather has delayed any serious work at the allotments trying to work down the soil is waterlogged. April brings bright sunshine and showers making every thing grow at once including the weeds!

Despite this warmer weather frosty nights can occur and there can be gale force winds so be prepared to protect tender plants. A dry spell would be very welcome!

Finish planting potatoes and earth up potatoes planted earlier

Start sowing winter cabbages and broccoli in a seedbed

Start start sowing Calabrese in biodegradable pots this avoids disturbing the roots when planting out under glass, with heat or at home (min temp 60 deg F).

Plant tomatoes, aubergines, French and runner beans, chilies and sweet corn.

Watch out for aphids catch them early you can rub them off if you are early enough and control weeds around fruit bushes and cane fruit.

Remove early flowers from new strawberry plants this will give a better crop later.

Keep checking the greenhouse on sunny days as temperatures can rocket burning up plants and destroying them.

Most established lawns have suffered from the prolonged wet weather now is the time to scarify removing dead growth and moss apply a spring fertilizer.
