Two
of the Newton Abbot plots have their own beehives, Decoy Field
and Cooke's Field.
As
NADCAA have no knowledge of Beekeeping, the advice of a member
of the Devon Beekeepers Association has been sought on the finer
points of beekeeping, to ensure the safety of members.
The
Beekeeper Agrees/Understands -
- That
bees may be kept on any of the allotment fields run by the
Association after permission is obtained from the landlords,
namely The Town Council and or Mr Rew, this permission may
be withdrawn at any time.
- To
pay Annual Insurance against any liabilities arising from
the presence of bees on any field. A photocopy to be sent
to the Secretary.
- To
maintain Membership of the Beekeepers Association and act
in accordance with the advice of its inspectors.
- To
keep all hives in a good state of repair, to take care of
the bees and their welfare, to take the necessary precautions
to prevent swarms, and to deal with them promptly if and when
they occur.
- That,
the location of hives must be discussed and agreed with the
Association, the other members of the field and the Landlords
before being introduced to the field.
- To
provide all their own jars, smoke generators and other equipment
required to care for the bees and their welfare.
- To
remove angry Queens, which historically produce angry bees
that sting at will, and replace them with placid Queens.
- To
erect a flight-path net of a height that will ensure that
the bees travel up and away from the hives and not straight
out over the plots (usually 8 – 9 feet).
- To
bear all costs of running, moving and maintaining the hives
etc, and to erect warning notices where deemed necessary.
- To
supply honey at a negotiated price to the Association in suitable
jars or containers for re-sale at a mark up of between 15
and 20%, and to give the Association first option on any honey
for sale. All profits will go back into the Association.
- To
remove all my hives at my own expense if there are complaints
from members about being stung or if they interfere with any
member working their plot, (Recommended Time: March).
- This
Agreement is renewable on the first day of March each year
and will be updated should unforeseen problems arise.
